Bio:
I organized and developed COS in Feb. 1973, at the age of twenty. Without prior product knowledge, sales or management/educational experience, and with my father's co-signature, I secured the loan of $1,500.00 to start the business. Sales were $8,900.00 the first year of business and current sales today are $4,000,000.00. I am responsible for annual budgets, complete fiscal accountability, overall company goals and objectives as well as setting a method of operation in attainment of those goals; development of policy and procedures, and implementation of an equitable wage and benefits program including the administration of all benefits.
Community involvement:
Involved in the "Energy Task Force" with the City of San Antonio (1979), The "Employment and Training Advisory Council" with the City of San Antonio (1979-1981), National Federation of Women's Program Dev. (1979-1980), Goodwill Industries, Bd Member (1978-1994), and Mexican American Unity Council, Bd Member (1986-1999)
Person most admired:
My Father (who passed away in 2000). I admired his work ethic, his beliefs (particularly in ME), his perseverance, dedication, and sense of responsibility! He left me a legacy (not of money) but rich in values. We immigrated from Mexico in 1958 and I am thankful for his vision to move us to a place where, with hard work, anything is possible! Although, he didn't speak much English and wasn't formally educated, he always tried his best, wasn't afraid to tackle anything, and taught me more than I can say!
Favorite book:
My favorite book is "Your Best Life Now," by Joel Osteen. After 33 years in business I feel I can "Want More" and "Expect More" out of life, without feeling quilty. I have come to love both my business, my family and those around me, without continuing to sacrifice either/or.
What I enjoy most about my work:
"Making a Difference" - not just for my clients, but for my staff and my family. I also enjoy learning something new -- which happens every day, even if it's the hard way!
Greatest accomplishment:
Surviving in business for 33 years, and all its trials and tribulations! But most important of all, surviving the "Power Channels" and all the adversities in between.
Greatest challenge:
Losing 7 sales staff members to a competitor which cost us $750,000.00 in lost business. Because we had a simple non-disclosure/non-solicitation agreement which staff had signed, we were able to file a lawsuit and settled for some resititution. I learned it should have been legalized, with more substance and therefore binding which would have allowed us to recoup our total losses. Today that legal form is now in place!
Advances I envision in my field over the next 10 years:
As an Independent Dealer, it's difficult to compete with the purchasing power of Office Depot etc. However, COS has since joined a co-op buying group that will afford us an equal playing field. E-Commerce improvements are also underway with upgrades that will enhance our website and on-line ordering as well as the automation of processes and procedures with added new technology.
Strategies to maintain balance in my life:
I have learned to recognize when it's time to "Take Time!" -- Not just for myself but for my family members that need and miss me.
Advice for emerging entrepreneurs:
Expect the unexpected! Deal with it, learn from it and move on! Don't take anything or anyone for granted and know that tomorrow will always bring change! Be ready for change and if you're not ready, adjust, modify and then "Be Ready".
