Person most admired:
My parents:
My father ran sales and distribution for General Electric large appliance division and taught me you can be successful and ethical at the same time.
My mother taught me how to interact with people effectively.
They are wonderful people.
Favorite book:
Journey of Souls, Newton
We are responsible for our actions.
What I enjoy most about my work:
I love the excitement of the challenge and the effort of making a company successful with a team which creates passion and jobs.
Greatest accomplishment:
Co-founding and growing ETI against the odds of having two women running a company, funding it and driving its direction. ETI is still a private and excellent company under Kay Hammer's ongoing command.
Greatest challenge:
I was faced with a betrayal by a person who I had mentored. I learned that you must remain professional, continue to take the high road, and always do what is right for the company first.
Advances I envision in my field over the next 10 years:
Two-thirds of the productivity gains in the country over the last decade have been caused by the technology industry. I believe that this trend will definitely continue if we all strive to keep the fundaments of business intact, if we succeed in holding greed to a minimum, and if we target our focus on the goal of growing good companies with good products. Training our young people and retraining our work force is necessary to support the improved productivity per employee.
Strategies to maintain balance in my life:
I don't do a good job of this, but friends are important to me, and taking vacation with my family is important to me. I spend as much time with those I love as possible. (Parents will not be here forever.) But work is my passion and it is almost impossible for a woman to be a super woman with kids and an entrepreneurial executive position.
Advice for emerging entrepreneurs:
Four things:
1)Know yourself and your capabilities;
2)Augment your skills with team members;
3)Learn from others; and
4)Understand what you are getting into and be willing to sacrifice what you will have to sacrifice for the benefit of the company.
If you cannot do these things, go to work for a large company.
