Person most admired:
Juan Bautista Martinez - my father. JB is a considerate person with a very large heart - always willing to help others. He is a well-rounded, well-spoken and well-educated person. His dedication to his professional career and devotion to his family earned him a reputation as a very dignified person in Venezuela?s business and political arena. His successes are numerous and, without a doubt, he is the benchmark of my life.
Favorite book:
Seabiscuit - Besides the fact that I am a horse lover, this story of an extraordinary horse and athlete who exceeded limits and expectations to ultimately win, inspired me tremendously, and it keeps me going in my day-to-day professional and personal life. I will never give up on myself, and I will always seek out alternate or uncommon ways to achieve my goals.
What I enjoy most about my work:
The opportunity to help, interact and learn from people. I meet professionals of various, executive-level positions such as Directors, Presidents, CEO and founders of successful, local companies and their advice and experiences are fascinating and inspiring. I also enjoy being around the talented people in my office. We?re a true team and their energy, drive and dedication are admirable and appreciated. I value all I have learned and I am excited about the opportunities ahead.
Greatest accomplishment:
Graduating from St. Edward?s University!! I came to Austin 12 years ago unable to speak in English. Most importantly, however, I came with a dream. I learned the language and then started to pursue what I now consider my greatest personal achievement. Today, I am a graduate of St. Edward?s University and I own a design firm and a business magazine in Austin called NSIDE Magazine, Inc. St. Edward?s was instrumental in preparing me for my successes in life.
Greatest challenge:
My greatest challenge was leaving my family, country, friends and culture behind to pursue a college education in a foreign country. Another big challenge was starting my first company and overcoming the many obstacles that come with such a big decision. I learned to accept my mistakes for what they were, mistakes, then to quickly find a solution to continue growing my company and myself.
Advances I envision in my field over the next 10 years:
The magazine industry is growing as consumers are learning to better identify their personal needs. Last year 440 new magazines were published in the United States due to the demand for magazines in specialty industries such as automotive, food, travel, and etc. We have also experienced a decline in retail magazine sales and an increase of two percent in subscription sales. This industry I believe will keep growing by at least five to six percent every year, based on current trends. Total subscription sales of magazines will increase from 74 percent currently, to approximately 85 to 90 percent in the United States.
Strategies to maintain balance in my life:
My strategy is to understand and set my priorities straight. I work as hard as I play but knowing what my priorities are helps me stay focused and keeps me right on track with my personal and business goals. Also, understanding what?s important for those individuals I work and surround myself with is key to bringing balance to my life.
Advice for emerging entrepreneurs:
The best advice I can give to emerging entrepreneurs is to surround themselves with people who have the same drive, values, work ethic and determination as they do to succeed in life. I also encourage them not to be afraid of making business mistakes, to take chances and to always trust themselves.
